In an ode to one of Hollywood's most iconic figures, the legendary Bette Davis, the Hollywood Museum hosted a special tribute event as part of its Lobby Tribute Series. The evening brought together close friends and admirers to celebrate the life and career of the legendary actress. Among the attendees was none other than Lily Tomlin, who shared an unforgettable story from her own life involving the legendary star.
Bette Davis: An Evening to Remember
Tomlin reminisced about the time she had the opportunity to meet Davis at a dinner party held in a tiny apartment. "We were all just Hollywood hopefuls back then," she said. "None of us ever imagined we'd be sitting in such an intimate setting with someone as legendary as Bette Davis. We were all a bundle of nerves—excited, yet terrified at the same time. It was like meeting royalty, but in a cramped little apartment."

The Powerhouse Presence of Bette Davis
Tomlin described how Davis's arrival transformed the atmosphere of the gathering. "Bette walked in like a force of nature, cigarette in hand, radiating power. It wasn’t about showing off; it was just who she was—a powerhouse with an inner strength that commanded attention. She had a presence that filled the room, even in such a small space."

A Candid Conversation with Bette Davis
During the evening, Davis turned her attention to Tomlin's latest project, questioning her about her new co-star, John Travolta. "We were all scared to be singled out," Tomlin recalled. "I had just finished working on Moment By Moment with John Travolta. The film hadn’t been released yet, and everyone was curious about this new star I had worked with. When Bette asked me what he was like, I gave her a typical Hollywood answer—'Oh, he’s a darling guy.' But Bette wasn’t satisfied with that."

Davis wasn’t one to mince words. "She took a drag on her cigarette, exhaled, and then barked at me, 'To hell with darling! Is he talented?'" Tomlin continued. "I was caught off guard, stammering, 'Why, yes, yes he is.' I felt like I had been put on the spot, and I didn’t want to disappoint her. I meekly added, 'He is!' After that, I was practically speechless for the rest of the evening. It was an experience I’ll never forget."
