Let’s face it, reality can hit hard when you least expect it. Kelly Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, have enjoyed massive success in their careers, but now their eldest son, Michael, is out on his own, facing the real-world challenges of adulthood for the first time.
Michael's Journey Into Independence
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 23, the 49-year-old Kelly Ripa gave fans a candid look into her son's life. “Michael lives in Brooklyn, specifically in Bushwick,” she shared with the late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel. “He absolutely loves the freedom that comes with living independently. However, there's one part of adulthood he’s not a fan of—paying rent. He’s constantly short on cash, and I think this is the first time he’s really experienced what it means to be truly broke.”
It’s been so tough for the young man that according to Kelly, he’s eagerly waiting for his yearly Halloween cash gift from his grandparents. “He’s called at least three times asking, ‘Has the Halloween envelope arrived?’ because he needs to take the subway just to have enough for electricity,” Kelly revealed. “It’s a reality check for him, but it’s also part of growing up and learning how to handle responsibility.”

The Family Dynamic
Kelly and Mark, 48, also share two more children—Lola, 18, and Joaquin, 16. While Michael has stepped out into the world, their daughter Lola isn’t far behind. Recently, she moved into her dorm room at New York University. “We moved Lola into her dorm, and it’s one of those moments where you don’t realize how close the kids are until it’s time to say goodbye,” Kelly reflected during an episode of her popular ABC program, Live With Kelly and Ryan.

Learning Through Experience
“The younger two are really close in age. Honestly, I didn’t even know I was pregnant with the third one because I was still nursing the second one,” Kelly explained on-air. “I assumed I was just gaining weight from nursing, but turns out I was expecting another baby. So they really are very, very close, and I didn’t realize how close they were until it was time to say goodbye.”
As any parent knows, watching your children spread their wings and fly can be bittersweet. But Kelly is all about helping her kids gain real-world experience. “It’s tough, but it’s part of life,” she said. “We want them to learn how to navigate the world on their own, and these experiences, no matter how challenging, are important for their growth.”
