Let’s dive into the heartwarming story of David Oyelowo and his wife, Jessica. Both are Hollywood stars, yet they’ve managed to keep their marriage strong for over two decades. How do they do it? The answer lies in a simple yet powerful rule that keeps them connected no matter what life throws their way.
Staying Together Through Thick and Thin
David Oyelowo, the talented actor known for his incredible performances, recently shared an exclusive insight into his long-lasting marriage with his wife, Jessica. Speaking at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Patron of the Artists Awards on November 7, David revealed the secret to their enduring relationship. “In a business that’s notoriously tough on marriages, my wife and I have a two-week rule,” the 43-year-old actor told Closer Weekly. “We’ve never been apart for more than two weeks. And guess what? We’ve stuck to that rule for 21 years!”
Breaking the Rule (Once)
Of course, even the best-laid plans can hit a snag. David admitted that they did exceed their self-imposed limit once—by just 11 hours. “It was actually Tim Burton’s fault,” he joked, explaining how Jessica’s filming schedule changed while she was working on one of Burton’s projects. “We cried over it, but it’s never happened again. We learned our lesson.”

Family First: Lessons for the Next Generation
David and Jessica tied the knot in 1998, and together they’ve raised two wonderful children: Asher and Caleb. Beyond their personal rule of staying close, the couple is also committed to instilling important values in their kids. “Kindness. Thinking of others before yourself,” David explained. “That’s something Ava DuVernay does beautifully—supporting female directors and performers. In a town like Hollywood, which can be all about the self, being selfless is something my wife and I constantly try to teach our children.”
While their kids are their top priority, David and Jessica also carve out quality time for each other. “It might sound simple, but we love dinner and a movie,” David confessed. “We enjoy discussing the nuances of films, and we’re both passionate about travel as well. Those moments together are incredibly special.”
