It’s with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to one of the most beloved figures in the world of comedy, Tim Conway. Best known for his unforgettable role as the Oldest Man on The Carol Burnett Show, Tim passed away at the age of 85 in the Los Angeles area on May 14, 2019. His representative, Howard Bragman, confirmed the sad news to Closer Weekly. Tim leaves behind a legacy of laughter, his devoted wife of 35 years, Charlene Conway, and a loving family that includes several children and grandchildren.
A Life Full of Laughter and Talent
Tim Conway was more than just an actor; he was a master of comedy. Whether it was his work on McHale’s Navy or his hilarious antics on The Carol Burnett Show, Tim had an uncanny ability to make people laugh. But here's the thing — it wasn’t just about being funny. Tim had a natural talent for comedy that seemed to come effortlessly. In a 2004 episode of The Interviews: An Oral History of Television, Tim revealed that he didn’t have any formal training. "I had no professional training," he admitted. "I had a sense of humor and had been in front of a microphone." That raw talent and genuine humor are what made him a legend in the entertainment industry.
Health Challenges in Later Years
Before his passing, Tim faced health challenges due to complications from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). Despite these struggles, it’s important to note that Tim did not suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s, as reported by People. His final years were marked by resilience and the support of his loving family, especially his wife, Charlene.

A Family in Transition
In April 2019, Charlene Conway was appointed as her husband's conservator, according to court documents obtained by Closer Weekly. This decision came after a legal process involving Tim’s stepdaughter, Kelly Conway, who initially sought to be appointed as the conservator to manage his medical treatments. The situation was complex, with Kelly alleging that Charlene planned to move Tim from his current skilled nursing facility, which provided excellent care, to one that wouldn’t meet his specific needs. Ultimately, the court found Charlene to be a suitable and qualified conservator, and Kelly consented to the appointment. It’s clear that both women had Tim’s best interests at heart during this difficult time.

Tim Conway’s passing leaves a void in the world of entertainment, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of comedians and actors. His ability to bring joy to millions through his performances is something that cannot be replaced. As we reflect on his life and career, we are reminded of the power of laughter and the impact one person can have on the world.

Here's a photo of Kelly, Tim, and Charlene in 1983, capturing a moment from a different time in their lives.
Kelly Conway filed the documents in Los Angeles in August 2018, expressing concerns about her stepmother's plans to move Tim to a nursing facility that wouldn’t provide the same level of care. She argued that Tim couldn’t properly care for himself and was almost entirely unresponsive, making her the better choice for conservator. However, after careful consideration, the court decided in favor of Charlene, who was deemed suitable and qualified to take on this role.
We will forever cherish the memories of Tim Conway and the joy he brought to so many lives. Thank you, Tim, for the laughter and the memories.
