Breaking News: 'Russian Doll' Nabs 13 Emmy Nominations

On Tuesday, July 16, the world of television got a major shake-up when the 2019 Emmy nominations were announced. Among the big winners was Netflix's groundbreaking series Russian Doll, which scored an impressive 13 nominations. This included a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as recognition for writing and acting talents, all centered around the show's creator and star, Natasha Lyonne. Natasha, who's no stranger to hard work, played a pivotal role in every aspect of the series—producing, writing, directing, and, of course, starring. It’s no wonder she’s thrilled with the recognition.

Speaking exclusively to Closer Weekly just a few days later on Monday, July 22, at the opening night of Jacqueline Novak: Get on Your Knees at the Cherry Lane Theater, the 40-year-old actress opened up about the nominations. "I'm completely blown away," she said with a smile. "Honestly, it just feels really, really good. Like, deeply affirming." And who could blame her? After all, it's not every day that a show so daring and unconventional gets the love it deserves.

What's 'Russian Doll' All About?

For those who haven't had the pleasure of diving into Russian Doll, let's break it down. The show centers on Nadia Vulvokov, a New York City woman played by Natasha herself. Nadia finds herself stuck in a time loop, reminiscent of the classic movie Groundhog Day. Every time she dies, she wakes up back at the same party being thrown in her honor. As the series progresses, Nadia embarks on a journey to uncover the mystery behind this strange phenomenon and find a way out of the loop. It’s a wild ride filled with twists, turns, and plenty of existential ponderings.

Why 'Russian Doll' Resonates So Deeply

Natasha went on to explain why the show has struck such a chord with audiences. "It's such a warm feeling because it makes me think about community," she said. "It's life-affirming to keep pushing forward creatively and to keep digging deep. I truly believe that Russian Doll dives into the deep end of storytelling, and the fact that it's being so well-received is incredibly encouraging." And let's not forget her collaboration with Amy Poehler, who co-created the show with Natasha and Leslye Headland. "To be on this journey with Amy, who's like a sister to me, is extraordinary," Natasha added with a heartfelt laugh.

Season 2 Is Already in the Works

Even before the Emmys, Netflix had already given the green light to a second season of Russian Doll. Fans can expect more of the same mind-bending magic, with Natasha teasing that the new episodes will be "the same show, just weirder." Like the first season, the new batch will feature eight episodes and continue to champion girl power with an all-female writing and directing team. Natasha, Amy, and Leslye are clearly committed to breaking boundaries and proving that women can tell some of the most compelling stories in TV today.

Natasha also touched on the challenges of creating something so unique. "It's not uncommon when you're making something to start with your first idea and end with your last, and if you're lucky, they're almost the same," she explained. "But everything in between can get really scary and murky. You're pulling it apart to put it back together again, building the rules of the game, the specifics of the world. It can feel like a house of cards falling apart, but then slowly, you're stacking them back together."
