Katie Couric Shares Her Colonoscopy Experience

Just days after Katie Couric revealed that she and her husband, John Molner, were going in for colonoscopies, the renowned journalist took to Instagram to share how things went. On November 24, Katie posted an update that not only highlighted the importance of getting screened but also gave a personal insight into her experience.

“Alright, listen up, friends,” the 62-year-old beauty wrote in a caption alongside a candid photo of her and John in hospital robes. “John and I had our his-and-hers colonoscopies on Friday. Ok listen up friends! Molner and I had his and hers colonoscopies on Friday (how romantic!) and they found TWO polyps during mine! These have the potential to develop into cancer and that’s why screening is SO IMPORTANT! (Molner got an all clear!) Thank you to the wonderful Dr Felice Schnoll-Sussman, the head of the Jay Monahan Center at @nyphospital and your entire fantastic team for nipping them in the bud (literally) and for honoring Jay’s memory by helping so many patients like us…even if it means spending your days up to your elbows in…well never mind. But please get screened everyone! Yeah, the prep isn’t that fun but it’s A LOT better than being diagnosed with colon cancer!!! #colonoscopy #getscreened #callyourdoctor #matchymatchy PS Did you all know the American Cancer Society has lowered the screening age to 45? So get your butts to the doctor! ❤️

Katie, who tragically lost her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, noted that John, 56, received an all-clear following his procedure. “Thankfully, John got the all-clear,” she reassured her followers. “But for me, they caught two polyps, which is a win in my book.”

    Gratitude to Her Medical Team

In her heartfelt Instagram post, Katie extended her gratitude to her “wonderful” doctor, Felice Schnoll-Sussman, who heads the Jay Monahan Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. “Thank you, Dr. Schnoll-Sussman, and your entire fantastic team for catching these early,” she wrote. “Your dedication to catching potential issues before they become serious is truly commendable.”

Katie also expressed her admiration for the team's commitment to honoring Jay’s legacy. “They’re honoring Jay’s memory by helping so many patients like us,” she continued. “Even if it means spending their days up to their elbows in… well, let’s just say it’s not glamorous, but it’s life-saving.”

Fans Respond with Support and Appreciation

Her followers were quick to respond, showering Katie with praise for her openness and advocacy. “Katie, you’re an absolute inspiration,” one fan commented. “Thank you for always bringing awareness to such an important issue.” Another fan chimed in, “You’ve saved lives, Katie, and for that, we’re eternally grateful.”

The prep might not be fun, but it’s a lot better than dealing with a cancer diagnosis,” she urged. “And hey, did you know the American Cancer Society now recommends screenings starting at age 45? So don’t wait—get your butt to the doctor!”

    Continuing Jay’s Legacy

Even after more than two decades since Jay’s passing, Katie remains deeply committed to raising awareness about colon cancer. In a previous interview with Closer Weekly, she opened up about how she continues to honor her late husband’s memory. “I think about Jay all the time,” she revealed. “We still have his photos everywhere, and I make sure to keep him alive in our daily lives. Raising two amazing kids who carry so much of him in them is my way of honoring him.”

Katie’s daughters, Elinor, 28, and Caroline, 23, are living testaments to her resilience and strength. “I’m proud of the person I’ve become because of Jay,” she reflected. “He would be so proud of us all.”

Clearly, Jay’s legacy lives on through Katie’s dedication to spreading awareness and encouraging others to prioritize their health.
