Let’s talk about something that’s been making waves in the news lately. Good Morning America co-anchor Lara Spencer is now under fire for a recent joke she made about Prince George’s love for ballet. It’s a story that’s sparked quite a bit of conversation, and trust me, people are not holding back their opinions.

A Light-Hearted Joke or Unnecessary Criticism?

It all started during the August 22 episode of the ever-popular ABC morning show. Lara, who's been in the business for decades, was discussing the rigorous curriculum the young royal will be tackling at school. At 50 years old, she brought up how Prince George, like any other first or second grader, will be diving into subjects like math, science, and history. But here’s the kicker — he’ll also be exploring religious studies, computer programming, poetry, and, yes, ballet.

“In addition to the usual first or second grade things, like math, science and history, the future King of England will be putting down the Play-Doh to take on religious studies, computer programming, poetry, and ballet, among other things,” Lara explained, with the audience erupting into laughter. Now, it’s worth noting that laughter can sometimes be misinterpreted, but let’s keep going.

“He looks so happy about the ballet class!” Lara continued, showing a beaming picture of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s eldest son, 6, on screen. “William says [his son] absolutely loves ballet. … I have news for you, William: We’ll see how long that lasts.” Now, this is where things started to heat up. Was it a light-hearted joke, or did it come off as unnecessary criticism? The audience seemed to enjoy it, but the internet had a different take.

Public Reaction: A Mix of Outrage and Support

It didn’t take long for the backlash to roll in. Viewers were quick to call out Lara for her comment, with Dance Magazine even labeling it as "bullying." They pointed out that what could have been a harmless joke about the young prince taking on advanced subjects turned into something more patronizing, especially towards little George. Even Star Trek star George Takei chimed in, expressing his disappointment.

“[This] shows that ‘toxic masculinity’ can be spread viciously by insensitive women, too,” George tweeted. “As a fellow ‘George’ and a lover of dance, I am very troubled and disappointed by her actions.” It’s clear that people are passionate about supporting young boys who choose to pursue traditionally "female" activities like ballet. The conversation around gender norms and expectations is alive and well, and this incident only adds fuel to the fire.

My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday. From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain-and love every minute of it.

  • Recognizing the storm she had created, Lara took to Instagram to issue an apology. “My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday,” she wrote on Friday, August 23, alongside a serene photo of nature. “From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain—and love every minute of it.”

A Step Forward in the Conversation About Gender Norms

It’s important to remember that moments like these are opportunities for growth and learning. Lara’s apology was a step in the right direction, acknowledging the importance of allowing everyone—especially young boys—to explore their interests without judgment. Prince George might just be the future King of England, but he’s also a little boy who loves to dance, and that’s something we should all celebrate.
