From Dallas to Grandparenthood: Patrick Duffy’s New Chapter
When you think of Hollywood stars, Patrick Duffy’s name might immediately bring to mind his iconic role in Dallas. But there’s a role he cherishes even more these days: being a grandfather. At a recent event, the It’s a Wonderful Lifetime holiday party, Patrick sat down with Closer Weekly to share some heartfelt thoughts about his new family role. The 70-year-old actor revealed that his greatest joys now revolve around his four beautiful grandchildren. “My greatest pleasures now are my grandchildren because I have four,” he shared exclusively with Closer. Patrick went on to explain how being a grandparent allows him to relive the joy he and his late wife, Carlyn Rosser, experienced when raising their own children. “You get to relive memories,” he said with a warm smile. It’s clear that family remains at the center of Patrick’s heart.
Creating New Memories Without Recreating the Past
While Patrick is deeply connected to his grandchildren, he also emphasizes the importance of allowing them to create their own unique experiences. “It’s important not to try and recreate the memories,” he explained. “They’ve got to establish their own, and then you kind of fit into it.” Patrick sees his role as a grandparent as one of support and encouragement. He finds immense reward in witnessing the innocence of childhood and helping his grandchildren find that same sense of wonder as adults. “It’s really rewarding to see that innocence prevail, and then try and find it as an adult,” he said, reflecting on the beauty of generational connections.
Holiday Traditions: A Time for Family
With the holidays approaching, Patrick is eager to celebrate with his family. Reflecting on the importance of family during the festive season, he shared how he plans to instill values of innocence and appreciation in his grandchildren. “I realize that there’s probably only two holidays of the year that can instill that,” he explained. “One is Christmas, of course, and the other is Thanksgiving because that’s the time when you do gather as a family.” Patrick emphasized the significance of these gatherings, where family units come together and create lasting memories. “Without that, you’re just wandering around, wondering when you’re going to get invited to dinner,” he joked, highlighting the importance of togetherness during the holidays.

The Magic of Santa Claus and Holiday Traditions
Patrick also shared his excitement for Santa Claus and his approach to making the holidays special for his grandchildren. He revealed a unique family tradition: “We’ve always had the tradition that as soon as my [two sons Padraic, 45, and Conor, 39] got married and had children, we no longer go to their house for Christmas, or they don’t come to our house for Christmas.” Instead, Patrick believes in the importance of allowing children to wake up in their own beds on Christmas morning, surrounded by their immediate family. “It’s so important to wake up in your own bed as a child and just have that family unit together all day, in your pajamas, eating crap you shouldn’t eat,” he said with a laugh. “And then the parents trying to clean up all the mess. But that’s what it’s about.” Patrick explained that grandparents make their appearance a few days before or after the main event, ensuring that the magic of Christmas remains intact for the younger generation.
