There’s no denying that Marie Osmond has mastered the art of being a devoted mom to her eight children. But even she will admit that parenting isn’t always a walk in the park. In a heartfelt conversation with her co-hosts during an episode of The Talk, the legendary entertainer revealed some of the struggles she faced while raising her large family. One particularly tough moment came when one of her daughters found herself on the brink of homelessness.
Marie Reflects on Her Parenting Journey
During the episode, the 60-year-old superstar, mother to Stephen, 36, Jessica, 31, Rachael, 30, Brandon, 22, Brianna, 21, Matthew, 20, Abigail, 17, and the late Michael, opened up about the challenges of raising her brood. “I know that I enabled my older children a little bit,” she confessed to the audience. “All my kids are hard workers, but it’s so much easier to teach them when they’re young. Once they’re older, it becomes more difficult to guide them through tough situations.”
View this post on InstagramThis is always one of my favorite times, #GeneralConference weekend! I’m spending it in California with my husband Steve, daughter Abby, our son Stephen and his wife Claire and their precious children Stephen, Christian and Maxwell (our grandsons). 🥰 We enjoyed the day yesterday on their other grandparents 😉 yacht, Tom and Kelly Olds and their daughter Sara. They are some of the most generous, hard-working, kind hearted people I know. I am so thankful my son married into such a good family! As we sailed to Catalina we watched and listened to the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints share wisdom, stories of faith and Gods messages to the whole world. I hope you had a chance to watch yesterday, we will be watching the last final two sessions today as well. I could never write anything better than the words which will be spoken today. Tune in starting at 10am MDT here: churchofjesuschrist.org As I heard yesterday in a prayer, “Please open the heavens to us that we might be able to know what we should do and how we should act…” What a beautiful request to our loving Father in Heaven! May we always strive to listen to the Lord’s Spirit and then do God’s will by following our Savior’s example through serving one another! ♥️ @churchofjesuschrist #Family #Serving #GodsWill #LDSchurch #ConferenceWeekend #HappySunday

A Tough Love Moment with One of Her Daughters
Marie reminisced about a time when she had to draw the line with one of her daughters. “For instance, one of my daughters was struggling and just couldn’t seem to get her life together,” she recalled, referring to an unspecified child. “I kept helping her, over and over again. But at some point, I had to make a difficult decision. It sounds terrible, but there was a moment when she called me after countless requests for help, and I told her, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t help you anymore.’ I knew she might end up living in her car, but I realized that continuing to enable her would only make things worse in the long run.”
The Turning Point
Though the thought of her daughter becoming homeless was heartbreaking, Marie, star of Donny & Marie, knew she had to be firm. “She came to me and said it was the hardest time in her life, and I cried,” Marie shared. “But I knew that if I didn’t push her to reset, she’d stay stuck in that cycle forever. And guess what? Today, she’s one of my hardest-working kids. It was tough love, but it worked.”

The Moment of Realization
Marie recounted the pivotal moment when her daughter turned things around. “She sat there crying, saying, ‘Nobody loves me, nobody loves me,’” Marie remembered. “But then, she looked at herself in the mirror and said, ‘Well, I can love me.’ It was such a powerful moment—it gave her the strength to pull herself together. That’s the kind of resilience I hope all my kids develop.”
Through this experience, Marie learned a valuable lesson about parenting. “It’s important to teach your kids to have a strong work ethic,” she emphasized. “As parents, our job is to guide them in taking care of themselves, but we also need to be there for them when they truly need us. It’s a delicate balance, but one that pays off in the end.”
Marie’s story is a testament to her unwavering dedication as a mom. She’s not just a star on stage; she’s a remarkable parent who knows when to step in and when to let her kids find their own way.
