Staying Strong: Alan Alda's Journey with Parkinson's

Let’s talk about Alan Alda, the legendary actor who’s not just a household name but a true inspiration. In 2018, Alan bravely revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. But instead of letting it slow him down, the 83-year-old icon is doing everything possible to maintain his health. Recently, on the Today show, Alan shared how he’s handling this challenge with grace and determination.

“I’m doing great. Sure, I shake a little, but overall, I feel fantastic. I work out regularly,” Alan said with a smile. “There’s evidence that specific exercises can help slow the progression of the disease, so I dive into all sorts of activities. Some might call them crazy, but they keep me moving and smiling.”

Boxing, Juggling, and Sousa: Alan's Unique Routine

When Alan talks about his "crazy things," he’s not kidding. He’s picked up boxing, juggling, tennis, swimming, biking, and even marching. And yes, he really does march—to the music of John Philip Sousa. “I march to Sousa music,” he joked. “There’s always a Sousa tune playing somewhere in my house. It’s like a little parade every day!”

A Lifetime of Love and Support

Alan’s not alone in this journey. His wife, Arlene Alda, has been by his side for an incredible 62 years. In early October, Alan opened up about their enduring relationship. “My wife says the secret to a long marriage is a short memory,” he joked to Closer Weekly. “And you know what? It seems to work.”
