Every parent looks forward to that bittersweet moment when their child heads off to college. But when it finally happens, you realize it's much harder than you anticipated. Even former First Lady Michelle Obama experienced this exact rollercoaster of emotions when she waved goodbye to her youngest daughter, Sasha Obama, as she started her college journey at the University of Michigan last August.

Michelle Obama Opens Up About Saying Goodbye to Sasha

“Of course, there were tears. We tried to keep it together, not wanting to embarrass Sasha in front of her roommates. It was at the end of lunch when we had to say that final goodbye. Once we were in the car—me, Barack, and Malia who joined us—Sasha drove off on her own, giving us that last wave. That’s when the floodgates opened, and we were all sobbing,” Michelle shared with Today's Jenna Bush Hager, capturing the raw emotion of the moment.

Michelle’s husband, Barack Obama, and their 21-year-old daughter, Malia Obama, stood by her side, mustering all the courage they could to bid Sasha farewell at the university. Even though Michelle can now officially call herself an empty nester, she finds immense pride in her daughters pursuing higher education and blossoming into independent women. “I’m thrilled to see my girls grow into confident, self-sufficient individuals. It’s an exciting time for them,” she expressed with a mix of pride and nostalgia.

Those days are long gone,” Michelle admitted, capturing the universal feelings of parents everywhere.

A Summer of Adventure Before College

Before Sasha embarked on her college journey, the Obama family made the most of their time together with a memorable trip to France, hiking near Gordes in the Luberon. Reflecting on the years gone by, Barack finds it hard to comprehend how much his daughters have grown. “It’s surreal. Michelle and I are far too young to have daughters who are both almost in college. As a parent, it’s a little overwhelming,” he remarked, echoing the sentiments of countless parents worldwide.

Despite the bittersweet emotions, one thing is certain: Barack and Michelle have raised their daughters with love, guidance, and wisdom, preparing them for the world ahead. "Don’t worry, Barack. You’ve done an incredible job!"
