As Christmas approaches, Donnie Wahlberg is counting down the days to enjoy some well-deserved downtime with his family. The beloved star of Blue Bloods is thrilled to spend quality time with his wife, Jenny McCarthy, and their blended family of kids. But, as the holiday season unfolds, Donnie jokes that things are changing now that his children are growing up.
From Toys to Clothes: How Christmas Shopping Has Evolved
Donnie, now 50 years old, shares with Closer Weekly that Christmas gift-giving has taken a different turn in his household. “When the kids were younger, it was all about toys. Now, it’s more about clothes,” he reveals with a laugh. Speaking at the 10-year celebration of Target’s Heroes & Helpers program, Donnie adds, “My sons, Xavier, 26, and Elijah, 18, don’t just want gifts. Oh no, they always want money!”

The Changing Holiday Traditions in the Wahlberg-McCarthy Household
It's not just the presents that have changed in the Wahlberg-McCarthy household. Donnie, who is also the stepdad to Jenny’s 17-year-old son, Evan, who has autism, explained that this year marks a significant shift in their Christmas traditions. "We had to have a heart-to-heart with Jenny’s son about Santa Claus," Donnie said. "We had to let him know that Santa isn’t exactly real, but the spirit of Santa is alive and well."
He continues, “Evan took the news surprisingly well. He understands the magic behind Santa and the symbolism it represents. It’s heartwarming to see how he embraces the true meaning of the season.”

Donnie's Praise for His Stepson Evan
Donnie couldn’t help but express pride in how his stepson Evan handled the revelation about Santa. "Evan is truly remarkable. He sees the good in everything, and he saw the good in learning that Santa isn’t real," Donnie shared. "He understands that the real magic comes from the kindness and generosity of people who take on the role of Santa. It’s about spreading joy and making others feel special during the holiday season."
Spreading Joy Through Community Service
While attending the Heroes & Helpers program, which pairs local police officers and firefighters with underprivileged children to help them shop for holiday gifts for their families, Donnie emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. “It’s not all about what we’re going to get this Christmas. It’s about teaching my kids the value of helping others and being a part of something meaningful,” he explained.
“I want to be a hero to my kids, Xavier, Elijah, and Evan, by showing them the importance of giving back. Being involved in events like this helps them understand that there’s more to life than just receiving gifts. It’s about making a difference and touching lives,” Donnie added.
