If there's one name that stands out in the world of acting, it's Laura Linney. With an impressive list of accolades under her belt—four Emmys, three Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globes, and a SAG Award—you'd think she'd have a clear favorite career moment, right? Well, as it turns out, Laura, now 55, doesn't quite see it that way. Her approach to acting is refreshingly different from the norm.
“You know, I really don’t know,” Laura said exclusively to Closer Weekly at the 2019 Tony Awards on June 9. She went on to explain, “I think it’s because I don’t view my journey as a career per se. I’ve managed to navigate this world without thinking of it as a career. It’s more of a passion, a way of life.”
Acting: A Vocation, Not Just a Career
When asked about her thought process, Laura, who playfully feuded with fellow actress Audra McDonald during the same event, revealed that she sees acting as much more than just a job. “To me, it’s a vocation,” she shared. “You can choose how you perceive your life in the arts. You have to be careful about how you define yourself and those around you. Remember why you started this journey and what gives it its power and magic. If all you’re focused on is yourself, you might lose that magic pretty quickly.”

What’s Next for Laura Linney?
Looking ahead, the four-time Tony nominee is set to star in a one-woman production of My Name Is Lucy Barton. This show, based on the novel by Elizabeth Strout, is set to hit Broadway in January 2020. Could this be the role that finally brings Laura a Tony Award? “It was something I was asked to do,” Laura said with a candid smile. “A one-woman show is both terrifying and exhilarating. But with such wonderful people involved, I’d be crazy to say no.”
