In a heartfelt Facebook post shared on Tuesday, July 22, Tony, now 79, expressed his deep devotion. "I’ve been told by doctors to place Val in hospice care, but I can’t—and I won’t," he wrote. "Our 40 years of shared commitment to each other mean everything to me. And because of the incredible good deeds she’s brought into our lives while she’s been here on earth, I simply can’t let her go just yet."
Valerie's Battle Against Cancer: A Shocking Diagnosis
Valerie's journey with cancer began in 2013 when she was diagnosed with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a condition where cancer cells invade the protective membrane surrounding the brain. This diagnosis came as a shock to Tony and Valerie, especially since she had triumphed over lung cancer just four years prior in 2009. Known for her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Valerie's resilience and determination have been an inspiration to many.

Upon hearing the news of her second diagnosis, doctors informed Valerie and Tony, parents to their adopted daughter, Cristina Cacciotti, and Tony’s four children from previous marriages, that she might only have about three months left to live. However, Valerie defied the odds and lived for six remarkable years beyond their expectations. Her strength and courage have been nothing short of extraordinary.

Though Tony acknowledges the doctors’ professional advice and concern, he cannot imagine stepping away from Valerie’s side. "We will continue moving forward as long as the powers above allow us," he shared, adding that he is doing "my absolute best to make Val as comfortable as possible."
