Barbra Streisand Opens Up About Her Unique Relationship With Singing

Barbra Streisand Reveals Singing Isn't 'Cathartic' for Her

You know her as one of the greatest vocalists of our time, but guess what? Barbra Streisand doesn't exactly go around belting out songs unless she's on stage or in the studio. At 77 years old, the legendary singer revealed to Mirror that singing just isn’t something she does casually. “I never sing unless I have to. I don’t sing around the house,” she said with a laugh. “For me, singing is work—it’s professional. It’s not cathartic; it’s the opposite. If I sang 'Happy Birthday' at a birthday party, I’d probably sound terrible.”

Barbra’s Unique Perspective on Singing

Think about it—Barbra Streisand, the EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), doesn’t exactly see herself as someone who just sings for fun. That’s right, folks. This isn’t someone who hums in the shower or sings along to the radio. For Barbra, singing is her job, and it's serious business. “Singing is like work to me,” she explained. “It’s something I do, but it’s not something I do just for the heck of it. It’s not cathartic—it’s the opposite. I don’t go around singing. If I did, I’d probably sound lousy.”

Despite her incredible talent, Barbra isn’t immune to self-doubt. “I’m a paradox, I think,” she said. “I’m very vulnerable, and I also have a sense of who I am. This teacher once told me that’s a good thing. You need the vulnerability to balance the part of me that’s secure. Every once in a while, I get insecure and think, ‘Do you think you can do that?’ You have to have self-doubt. It’s what motivates you.”

Barbra’s Comfort Zone: The Recording Studio

Even though Barbra might not be the type to break into song while doing the dishes, she does find comfort in the recording studio. “I love recording,” she said. “I love putting on the headphones and singing to the music I love. I love to sing in the studio because I don’t have to worry about how I look. It’s all about the music.”

Barbra’s dedication to her craft is evident in her incredible success. She holds the Billboard chart record as the female artist with the most number-one albums. Yet, despite all her accolades, she remains humble. “Every once in a while, I get insecure and think, ‘Can I really do that?’” she admitted. “You have to have self-doubt. It’s what motivates you.”
