She's starred in massive blockbusters like Jurassic World, but Bryce Dallas Howard has revealed that not everyone is impressed with her film résumé — including her own children. In a candid conversation, the accomplished actress shares how her kids' perspectives have shifted as they grow older, and what matters most to her now as a parent.
From Parental Approval to Child Approval: Bryce's Journey
“When you become a parent, everything changes,” Bryce, now 38, told Closer Weekly and other reporters at the 2nd Annual Environmental Media Association Honors Benefit Gala on September 28. “You go from craving your own parents' approval to desperately seeking your children's admiration. But let me tell you, it’s not always easy.”
Bryce recounted a memorable moment from her time directing an episode of The Mandalorian, the hit live-action Star Wars series. Her son Theo visited the set, and instead of being awestruck by the magic of the galaxy far, far away, he had a very different reaction. “He walked onto the set, looked around, and turned to me and said, ‘When are you doing a Marvel movie?’” Bryce laughed. “I was like, ‘Theo, let’s appreciate what we’ve got here.’ It’s just… you’d think they’d be impressed, but it doesn’t last long.”

Family Milestones and Growing Up
Bryce shares her life with her husband, actor Seth Gabel, and their two children: Theo, 12, and Beatrice, 7. As their kids grow older, Bryce finds herself reflecting on the milestones they're reaching and how much they've grown.

“Theo is growing up so fast—it’s incredible,” Bryce said, her voice filled with both wonder and nostalgia. “He’s taller, stronger, and wiser every day. And Beatrice, my little seven-year-old, is blossoming into this amazing little person. We’ve officially moved past the ‘Will they ever read? Will they sleep through the night?’ phase, and now it’s all about enjoying who they are becoming. It’s such a beautiful, fun stage!”
Raising Environmentally Conscious Kids
While her kids might not be overly impressed by her Hollywood career, Bryce is passionate about instilling values that matter deeply to her. One of those values is environmental awareness. “I love telling my kids stories about incredible people who are making a difference for our planet,” she explained. “For example, I show them videos of Greta Thunberg speaking to world leaders, standing up for what she believes in, and inspiring change. It’s so powerful.”

“When I see Theo’s eyes light up when he learns about these activists, it gives me hope,” Bryce continued. “He’s only four years younger than Greta, and he realizes that even young people can make a difference. It’s all about empowering them to believe in their own potential and showing them that the future can be bright if we work together. There’s nothing more fulfilling than watching my kids embrace that message.”
“It’s about tapping into each child’s unique strengths and showing them that they have the power to create positive change,” Bryce concluded. “Whether it’s through art, activism, or simply being kind to others, the future is in their hands—and I couldn’t be prouder of what they’re learning.”
