When it comes to Hollywood legends, Barbra Streisand is a name that needs no introduction. But to Brenda Vaccaro, she’s more than just a star—she’s a lifelong friend. At the opening night of Betrayal in New York City on September 5, Brenda opened up about their decades-long friendship, revealing the special bond they share.
A Friendship That Stands the Test of Time
“She’s not just a friend; she’s family,” Brenda, now 79, said exclusively to Closer Weekly. “We grew up together in the world of Broadway. Barbra was in I Can Get It For You Wholesale, and I was in Cactus Flower. Our theaters were just across the street from each other, and that’s where our friendship began. For years, she’s been one of my closest confidants.”
What makes their relationship work so well? Brenda credits their similar personalities. “I love her because she’s genuine, just like me. We don’t sugarcoat anything—we say it like it is. That honesty has kept us connected for so long.”

Barbra’s Reputation as a Perfectionist: Is It True?
Brenda, who has received nominations for an Academy Award, three Golden Globes, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Tonys, insists that Barbra isn’t difficult to work with—she’s just particular about her craft. “Every great artist is specific,” Brenda explained. “Barbra isn’t demanding; she’s meticulous. She knows exactly what she wants, and that’s what makes her a genius.”
When asked about Barbra’s reputation as a perfectionist, Brenda praised her friend for her attention to detail. “Being specific means thinking things through. Barbra is a great artist because she doesn’t leave anything to chance. She considers every detail, from the script to the color of her outfit. That’s what separates the greats from the rest.”
