Terri Irwin Shares Hilarious Story Of Meeting Steve Irwin: "No Girlfriend!"

Terri Irwin recalls the first time she met late husband Steve

Now, this is a story you don’t hear every day! Terri Irwin, the incredible wildlife conservationist and widow of the legendary Steve Irwin, recently opened up about the very first time she met her late husband. And let me tell you, it was a moment filled with humor and a touch of awkwardness. Imagine walking into what you think is a romantic introduction, only to find out there’s a little twist. That’s exactly what happened to Terri!

First Impressions Can Be Deceiving

Terri, now 55, shared with Us Weekly how Steve, the man who would later become her soulmate, made quite the first impression. “Well, it’s funny, because when Steve and I met, he asked me, ‘Would you like to meet my girlfriend?’” she recalled with a laugh. Can you imagine the whirlwind of emotions that must have hit her right then and there? “I just felt utterly crushed,” Terri admitted. But here’s the kicker—Steve wasn’t referring to a human girlfriend. Instead, he called out, “Hey, Suey,” and a little dog named Suey trotted over. “I went, ‘Boom! No girlfriend!’” Terri said, laughing at the memory. Talk about a heartwarming twist!

A Family Legacy of Love

Fast forward to today, and Terri’s eldest child, Bindi Irwin, is following in her parents’ footsteps when it comes to love. Bindi, a passionate conservationist like her dad, recently became engaged to her partner, Chandler Powell. And guess what? Their love story has some striking similarities to her parents’. “It’s just extraordinary. We met in the same place at the Australia Zoo that Mum and Dad did,” Bindi explained. “They have a photo of when they first met, and so do we, and we both have those silly little smiles. … Dad’s rocking his mullet, and Mom has her very much ’80s hair going. It’s so special. Just glowing.”

The Impact of Loss and Moving Forward

Of course, life hasn’t been without its challenges. Steve tragically passed away in September 2006 after being stung by a stingray while swimming out in Batt Reef, Australia. Though it’s been over a decade, his absence still resonates deeply with his loved ones. “Some days you feel the grief more than others,” Bindi, now 21, told Stellar magazine. “What gets to me are those moments when I’d love him to be here to share what we’re doing. It could be when my brother [Robert] is receiving an accolade for his photography, or it might be at the end of the day when we’re having dinner and laughing. I’ll think: ‘I wish Dad was here for this.’ But he’s just not there.”

Despite the pain, the Irwin family continues to honor Steve’s memory by keeping his passion for wildlife alive. Terri shared with Closer Weekly, “He was going 90 miles per hour always, rarely sleeping past 2 a.m. He’d do a full day’s work before I even [started], and he was just as passionate as what you saw on television. That’s why it’s so important for her to keep his legacy alive.”

Family First: Steve Irwin’s Role as a Dad

One of the most touching aspects of Steve’s legacy is his role as a father. Terri jokingly shared, “From the time they hatched, Steve was a hands-on dad. There was nothing that made him happier than sharing wildlife and adventures with Bindi and Robert.” It’s clear that Steve’s love for his family and the natural world was a driving force in everything he did.
