Hey there, friends! Let’s dive into something heartwarming and deeply personal. On Monday, October 7, during an episode of Dancing With the Stars, James Van Der Beek shared some incredible news with the world. He and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, are expecting their sixth baby! But here’s the thing—they’ve also faced some tough times, having experienced three miscarriages along the way.
A Moment of Joy Amidst Challenges
James took a moment during the show to open up about their journey. “We are so excited there’s a new little Van Der Beek on the way,” he said, addressing the cheering crowd just before his dance with partner Emma Slater. “We’ve had five beautiful kids, but in between those, we’ve also experienced three miscarriages.”
James went on to emphasize the importance of talking about miscarriage. “Miscarriage is something that people don’t talk about enough,” he explained. “We wanted to bring awareness to it and help de-stigmatize the experience as much as possible. It happens to so many people, and we think it’s important to create a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their stories.”

Bringing Vulnerability to the Spotlight
After sharing the big news, James delivered a stunning performance with his partner, Emma Slater, leaving the audience in awe. Later, he took to Instagram to reveal that he and Kimberly had planned to film their first ultrasound—even if it meant facing the possibility of no heartbeat. “We chose to have our first ultrasound on camera with our #DWTS crew capturing the result—something I NEVER thought we’d ever do,” he wrote.
James went on to explain the reasoning behind this bold decision. “But @vanderkimberly and I have been through three of those first appointments, where we’ve discovered either no heartbeat or no baby. She wanted to share this moment, and we decided to put ourselves out there—not knowing what we’d find—in an effort to chip away at any senseless stigma around miscarriage.”
Opening Up About the Journey
After the show, James spoke to Closer Weekly and other reporters, elaborating on why he wanted to show the public what it’s like to find out if you’re having a baby when the outcome could be uncertain. “It’s thrilling,” he said. “We’ve had a few appointments where we found out we weren’t adding to our family, and so Kimberly decided to do it on camera, to open it up and allow people to go through the experience with us—good result or not good result.”
He added, “Just to encourage people to talk about it. It’s a part of life. It really helps to go through it when you have the support of friends and family.”

They were rescued from the same pound on the same day, so we’re not 100% sure they’re not related… but it’s not like keeping them from getting married would curtail their extra-curricular activities, if that was their jam, so… we try not to think about it too much. Sorry for over sharing. But they are, as you can see, incredibly patient dogs. And for that we’re very grateful. (And yes, after a whole bunch of kids, we decided, “You know what might make this house really super crazy? TWO chihuahua mutt rescues. Let’s do it! 🤦🏼♂️) Love them, though…

James also highlighted the importance of breaking the silence around miscarriage. “People so often go through it in secret,” he noted. “You need to allow yourself space to grieve and process it. For us, walking out of that appointment was incredibly happy and exciting, and we want others to know they’re not alone in their journey.”
So, here’s to James, Kimberly, and their growing family! We’re sending them all the love and positivity as they navigate this beautiful and challenging chapter together.
