Picture this: Ina Garten, the culinary queen we all know and love, isn’t just a master in the kitchen—she’s also a relationship guru. Known to her fans as the Barefoot Contessa, Ina has been dishing out advice on food and entertaining for years, but her secret to happiness might just be her marriage to Jeffrey Garten. This December, the couple will mark an incredible 51 years together. Speaking at the New Yorker festival recently, Ina opened up about their enduring bond. “We’re each other’s biggest supporters,” she revealed. “Jeffrey is the most important person in my life, and he makes me feel like I’m the most important person in his.”
How Love Blossomed Between Ina and Jeffrey
Love stories often start in the most unexpected places, and Ina’s tale is no exception. Back in her teenage years, Ina Rosenberg first crossed paths with her future husband, Jeffrey Garten, at Dartmouth College while visiting her older brother. From the moment they met, Jeffrey had a way of making Ina feel special. “He just had this way of making me feel good,” she reminisces. “He’s smart, he’s fun, and he’s the best company anyone could ask for.”
Supporting Each Other Through Life’s Twists and Turns
Marriage isn’t always a smooth ride, but Ina and Jeffrey have faced life’s challenges together with grace and determination. In the early days of their marriage, Ina pursued a career in business, attending graduate school and even working as a budget analyst at the White House during the Ford and Carter administrations. But she soon realized that her heart wasn’t fully in it. “I knew I wasn’t destined to be the head of that organization,” she admits. “I was so lucky to have Jeffrey’s unwavering support as I searched for my true calling.”

Taking a Leap of Faith
In 1978, Ina took a bold step that would change her life forever. She left her government job, moved to New York, and purchased a gourmet shop called The Barefoot Contessa. Even though she lacked formal culinary training, her entrepreneurial spirit and passion turned the Westhampton store into a thriving success. This venture not only paved the way for her bestselling cookbooks but also launched her career as a beloved Food Network host. “We always set these long-term goals for ourselves, but they rarely turn out the way we imagine,” Ina reflects. “Instead, life takes unexpected turns, and those turns often lead to something even more extraordinary.” Looking back, she wishes she hadn’t wasted time worrying. “Just take the leap,” she encourages. “Try it. If it doesn’t work out, you can always pivot.”
A Marriage Without Children: A Unique Bond
As Ina’s career flourished, Jeffrey, a distinguished professor at Yale, stood by her side every step of the way. One significant difference in their relationship is that they chose not to have children. “Not having kids has been a big factor in our relationship,” Ina acknowledges. “When you have children, couples often disagree on how to raise them. We’ve avoided that.” Instead, their focus has always been on nurturing their partnership. “I don’t cook for myself,” Ina shares. “I cook to take care of Jeffrey. He’s my inspiration, and he always pushes me to reach for greater things.”
