Even though Helen Mirren plays a master of deception in the movie The Good Liar, it turns out she’s not exactly a pro at lying in real life. The 74-year-old acting legend opened up to Closer Weekly about her honesty during the NYC premiere of the film, sharing that she’s not great at spinning falsehoods.
“I’m not saying I’ve never told a fib here or there,” Helen confessed alongside her co-star Ian McKellen, another British icon. “But when it comes to fibbing about myself, I’m pretty upfront. I’ve always been honest about my age, and I’ve never tried to hide how old I am.” Helen’s refreshing candor makes it easy to trust just about everything she says. Let’s dive into five surprising facts about this remarkable woman that you might not already know!

Her Love Affair With Royal Roles
Helen has always had a knack for playing queens, starting with her stage debut at the age of 20 as Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra. She then won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen, and now she’s taking on the role of Catherine the Great in HBO’s miniseries. “I don’t mind if I don’t have many lines,” Helen joked, “as long as I get to wear a crown!”

Her First On-Screen Collaboration With Ian McKellen
Despite working together on Broadway, Helen and Ian McKellen hadn’t shared the big screen until The Good Liar. This thriller, which follows a wealthy widow and a con artist, opened on November 15. “It’s a fantastic, twisty thriller,” Helen told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s refreshing to see a film about older people that doesn’t focus on illness or memory loss.”
A Real-Life Romance With Liam Neeson
Helen revealed on The Graham Norton Show in 2018 that she lived with Liam Neeson for four years after working together on Excalibur in 1981. “We didn’t officially date, but we lived together for a while,” she said with a smile. “We were serious, and lucky me!”
