For Dyan, life at this stage is about cherishing every moment. Her "wonderful" daughter, Jennifer Grant, 53, and her grandchildren, Cary, 11, and Davian, 7, bring immense joy. Alongside her family, she carries the wisdom she’s earned over the years. “I had to learn how to be happy on my own. It wasn’t easy, but I learned to treasure each day,” she explains. This mindset has fueled her creative endeavors, including a stage musical about her life and her 2011 memoir, Dear Cary: My Life With Cary Grant, which is now being adapted into a U.K. miniseries.

After taking a nine-year hiatus from acting, Dyan made a triumphant return in the Pure Flix sitcom Mood Swings, showcasing her comedic prowess. “Comedy is my thing!” she tells Closer with a laugh. “It’s what I do best, and it’s been such a blast!”

Q&A with Dyan Cannon: The Return to Acting and Beyond

It’s fantastic to see you back on screen in Mood Swings! What brought you back after such a long break?

For the past five years, I’ve been pouring my heart into a Broadway musical about my life — Cary, of course, will play a part in it. Acting wasn’t something I craved during that time, but writing consumed me. I’ve been at it for 11 years now. So when the call came for Mood Swings, I thought, 'Why not? This could be fun.' And you know what? It truly is!

You also have an indie film, Hope’s Legacy, coming out next year. What can fans expect?

Hope’s Legacy is a heartwarming family film. Acting has rekindled my passion, and I’m exploring other projects. There’s even a series on the table that’s being considered. The possibilities are exciting!

    How’s the musical shaping up?

We’re still fine-tuning it. Initially, it took a darker turn, so we’re searching for the right writer to inject some humor. With 25 songs, it’s going to be quite the production!

You’ve had an incredible career, from your Oscar-nominated performances in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and Heaven Can Wait to writing, producing, and directing the short film Number One. Tell us about your experience with Heaven Can Wait.

When Warren Beatty first approached me about the role, I turned it down — not once, but three times. It seemed crazy to me, but Warren reassured me, saying, “We’ll figure it out.” Trusting him paid off. Working alongside Julie Christie was an absolute joy, and she became a cherished friend.
