On Wednesday, November 27, Savannah, 47, called into the Today show to explain her absence from the desk. With her signature warmth and honesty, she shared the story of how her playful son accidentally caused her injury. "Charley threw a toy train right at my eye," she explained. "It has a really sharp edge, and he threw it right at me." She went on to describe the severity of the injury, which turned out to be more serious than anyone initially thought.

Savannah explained that the incident happened the previous week. "And then about 24 hours later, I lost my vision in my right eye," she said. The injury was serious enough that doctors were concerned about her retina detaching. To prevent surgery, they’ve been performing laser procedures to stabilize the situation. "They told me to just take it easy," she explained. "They're trying to avoid having to do the full surgery, so I’m just resting and letting the healing process take its course."

Savannah didn’t shy away from sharing the full extent of the injury. "I really did lose my vision in my right eye," she confessed. "It was so blurry—not to get too graphic—but there was so much blood in my eye that it completely blocked my vision." Despite the severity, Savannah remains optimistic. The doctors are working hard to "weld back" her retina, and she's hopeful about the outcome. "It’s looking more hopeful," she said, adding a note of positivity to her update.

Even though Savannah is known for her resilience, whether she'll be able to participate in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade remains uncertain. "I’m actually still hoping I can do the parade tomorrow," she told her coworkers. "I’m not supposed to jump up and down because it’s kind of literally hanging by a thread. But I’m very positive because I think it’s going to be okay." Her determination and optimism are truly inspiring.

While Savannah is dealing with her injury, her young son Charley, who's only 2 years old, has no clue what he’s done. "He doesn’t even know what he did," she explained. "I wouldn’t want to make him feel bad for it. He hears me talking about it and he has no idea. I was FaceTiming with my mom to tell her, and he came running in and said, ‘I did it!’... He’s a bruiser!" Her words reveal a mother's love and understanding, even in the midst of a tough situation.
