Michael Douglas, the Hollywood legend known for portraying ruthless characters like Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, reveals a surprisingly softer side when he's around his first grandchild, Lua. It's a heartwarming transformation that even he couldn’t have scripted better.
“When Lua’s around, you can see the change in him. He softens right up,” shares Lua’s dad, Cameron Douglas, in an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly. At 75 years old, Michael is proving that beneath all the tough-guy roles lies a doting grandfather who melts at the sight of his granddaughter.
From Screen Villain to Real-Life Gentleman
It’s fascinating to witness how family life contrasts with Michael’s on-screen persona. “Watching him interact with Lua is just adorable,” Cameron adds with a chuckle. The two generations seem to share a bond that transcends the usual grandparent-grandchild relationship, creating moments filled with laughter and love.

Special Moments with Lua
Two-year-old Lua, who is set to celebrate her birthday on December 18, has a playful nickname for her grandpa. “She calls him ‘Bubba,’ and he loves to sit her on his chest, trying to get her to say it,” Cameron reveals. This playful interaction shows just how much Lua means to Michael, making these moments even more special.
But Lua isn’t the only one who’s got Michael wrapped around her little finger. Her great-grandfather, the legendary Kirk Douglas, is equally smitten. “I bring my daughter over to see him every weekend. We even teach her how to swim at his house,” Cameron continues. “The connection between them is truly beautiful. They bring out the best in each other.”
Family Traditions and Legacy
While Michael and Kirk’s movies might be too mature for Lua right now, Cameron has some fun ideas for introducing her to her family’s cinematic legacy. “My dad recently lent his voice for Green Eggs and Ham. Lua will definitely enjoy that,” Cameron notes. “And then there’s my grandfather’s classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It’s all about creating a bond through shared experiences.”

Gratitude and Reflection
Michael’s journey to becoming a devoted family man wasn’t without its challenges. Surviving stage IV throat cancer in 2010 gave him a fresh perspective on life. “Family has always been the most important thing to me,” Michael reflected during an interview with Closer this fall. “Meeting Catherine [Zeta-Jones] was extraordinary, and she’s been a rock for me.”

Beyond being a loving husband to Catherine, Michael is also a proud father to Cameron, whom he shares with ex-wife Diandra Luker, and to Dylan, 19, and Carys, 16, whom he shares with Catherine. “One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in life is that kindness is not weakness,” Michael shared. “I strive to be a good citizen of the world, always looking out for those less fortunate.”
