Let me tell you a story about Garth Brooks, the legendary country music star. You might know him for his chart-topping hits like "Friends in Low Places," but today, we're diving into the personal side of his life. Garth recently shared some heartfelt thoughts about his journey as a father and how his second marriage to Trisha Yearwood changed everything. During the celebration of A&E Biography’s special, Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On, he opened up about his first marriage to Sandy Mahl and how it all shaped the man he is today.
Now, Garth wasn’t shy about giving credit where it’s due. "My best friend showed up," the 57-year-old crooner said, gushing about his wife Trisha, who's 55. "She was a godsend, helping me through some tough times. Neither of us had kids before, so we were kind of flying blind. But you know what they say—two heads are better than one!" Garth explained during a NYC event on November 18, speaking to Closer Weekly and other reporters.

Putting the Kids First
Garth, who shares three daughters—Taylor, 27, August, 25, and Allie, 23—with Sandy, emphasized the importance of teamwork in co-parenting. "You know, divorce is never something I'd wish on anyone, but in our case, it worked out for the best," he reflected. "The three of us—me, Sandy, and Trisha—put aside our differences for the kids. It was all about them." Garth proudly mentioned how all three parents made sure to be present at every important event in the girls' lives. "Whether it was soccer, track, or softball, there was always at least one parent in the stands cheering them on. That's what family is all about," he said with a smile.

Life After Divorce
When asked about the challenges of fatherhood after his 2001 divorce from Sandy, Garth was honest about the difficulties. "Getting divorced was like a wake-up call. I moved back to Oklahoma, left Nashville, and stepped away from the music business for a while. I had to focus on these three little girls," he explained. Garth joked about the steep learning curve of raising daughters after growing up with five brothers and just one sister. "I went from a house full of boys to suddenly being surrounded by girls. It was a whole new world!"
But Garth didn’t let the challenges get the best of him. Instead, he embraced the role with open arms. "They’ve got me wrapped around their little fingers," he admitted to Closer and other outlets. "When I see them or they surprise me somewhere, it's written all over my face how much I adore them. I hope they feel the same way about me as I did about my mom. That's the kind of relationship I strive for."
